What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure for removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal muscles to improve the appearance of the abdomen. A tummy tuck addresses stubborn fat resistant to diet changes or exercise, loose skin, and stretched abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck is one of the best ways to realize a flatter, toned mid-section and regain confidence.

There are three primary types of tummy tucks, i.e., full, mini, and extended tummy tucks, and each is tailored to meet patients’ unique needs. Below, we elaborate on them.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck is a comprehensive surgical procedure addressing the entire abdominal area, i.e., the upper and lower abdomen. It’s ideal for both men and women concerned about their weakened abdominal muscles, excess skin, and fat.
During a full tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon makes an incision from hip to hip along the bikini line to access the underlying tissues and remove excess skin and fat. Incision length varies depending on the magnitude of the correction required.

After removing the excess fat and skin, the surgeon sutures the muscles to tighten the underlying abdominal muscles. This creates a firmer and more toned abdominal wall. The typical recovery time for a full tummy tuck is two to three weeks. But it may vary depending on your overall health and the surgery’s extent.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck explicitly targets the lower abdomen below the belly button. It’s the ideal option for people with mild to moderate abdominal concerns and those who don’t require extensive correction surgery. It’s suitable for people with changes in the lower abdomen due to pregnancies, aging, and weight fluctuations.
During a mini tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon makes a small incision above the pubic area to access the lower abdominal tissues to remove excess skin and fat. A mini tummy tuck is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time (two weeks) since it only focuses on removing excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck addresses concerns in the abdominal area and the lower back. It’s the best option for individuals requiring extensive contouring to remove excess fat and skin in the abdomen, love handles, and lower back.
During an extended tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon makes an incision extending around the hips and lower back to remove excess skin and fat. Recovery from an extended tummy tuck is three to four weeks.

Best Candidates For A Tummy Tuck

The following factors indicate whether you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck.

  • Excess skin and fat–a tummy tuck can help remove excess skin and fat after a pregnancy or weight loss, especially if you have sagging skin.
  • Weakened abdominal muscles–abdominal muscles can weaken due to pregnancy. A tummy tuck is a viable solution for tightening weak and separated abdominal muscles and restoring the abdominal contour.
  • Stable weight–the procedure works excellently when you’re at your ideal weight.
During the consultation with Dr. Andrew Freel, he’ll assess your circumstances and goals and recommend if a tummy tuck is your best option.
