Breast Lift (Mastopexy) in Baton Rouge

A breast lift can do wonders for the shape and appearance of your breasts. When issues like sagging and loose skin begin to give the breasts a saggy, flat, and unattractive appearance, it may be time to consider undergoing breast lift surgery. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Freel with Freel Plastic Surgery offers breast lift surgery in Baton Rouge.

What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a procedure designed to improve the shape of the breasts and “Lift” them up back into a more youthful position.  A breast lift can be performed in conjunction with a breast reduction or breast augmentation to either make the breasts smaller or larger.

A breast lift typically involves making various incisions around the nipple and on the inferior portion of the breast to elevate the nipple and the breast tissue itself.  The areola (colored tissue around the nipple) is typically reduced in size and positioned more appropriately on the breast.  The shape of the breast is also improved with the procedure, making it appear more rounded and youthful.

Who Is a Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Anyone who is displeased with the shape or position of her breasts is a good candidate for a breast lift in Baton Rouge. Typically, it is performed in women who have finished having children and have finished breastfeeding.  Occasionally, some women have low-set nipples with extra skin without having had children.  They may also be a candidate for surgery.

Patients who are actively smoking are not great candidates for this surgery as they have a high risk of wound-healing complications.  Surgery should be delayed for six weeks after smoking cessation.

During your consultation, Dr. Freel can examine the breasts and ask about the issues you want to address to help determine if a breast lift is right for you.

Can I Tighten the Skin and Improve the Shape of My Breast Without Surgery?

Unfortunately, once the skin loses its elasticity (or stretches out), it will not tighten again.  Weight loss, diet and exercise, and non-surgical treatments will not tighten the skin.  Only surgical removal of the excess skin will be able to tighten and lift the breast back into a pleasing position.

Can I have Breast Implants and a Breast Lift at the Same Time?

Augmentation mastopexy is a great procedure to take care of this frequent concern.  The procedure combines a breast lift with breast implants to help reshape the breast and also lead to a larger breast. These two procedures can frequently be combined to help restore volume to the breasts in addition to lifting them.

Not all surgeons will perform this combination of procedures, but we are very comfortable and experienced with this surgery and have successfully performed it numerous times.

What is the Recovery After a Breast Lift?

The surgery itself usually takes approximately two hours.  The recovery is fairly easy.  Most people have some mild pain for about a week.  Vigorous exercise is avoided for the first three weeks.  Most people can return to work in one week with minimal restrictions.

Results usually take 6 – 8 weeks to finalize once the swelling has subsided.

Can Breast Implants be Placed to Avoid a Breast Lift?

This is a frequent question that we receive. In general, breast implants make the breasts larger but do not lift the breasts.  A breast lift is required to tighten the skin and lift the nipple.

Occasionally, breast implants can be inserted slightly lower to help elevate the appearance of the nipple. But most of the time, a breast lift is needed to obtain the best result.  Only an in-person consultation can determine what is the best procedure to obtain the desired results.

Can I receive a Breast Lift after Breast Cancer?

A breast lift is frequently performed on the non-cancerous breast in patients with Breast Cancer to help the patient achieve symmetry (breasts that are even in size and shape).  This procedure is a great tool to help women overcome the treatment of Breast Cancer and improve their self-esteem after this terrible disease.

How Much Will My Breast Lift Cost?

The price of your breast lift will depend on the types of techniques used and the amount of work required. The cost will be discussed during your consultation.

This procedure is also covered by insurance by most insurance carriers.  Our office staff can submit the required paperwork to obtain insurance approval in this situation.
